Updated: May 18

Heehee, fart. This is actually a thing and not just your fart that smells like eggs. If you want to learn why your fart smells like eggs, go here.

What is a Fart Egg, aka Fairy Egg?

Fizzleberry in the nesting box

Fart eggs (also called fairy eggs, diminutive eggs, cock eggs, wind eggs, witch eggs, dwarf eggs) are teeny tiny eggs laid by normal-sized hens. They usually are just egg white, just egg yolk, or possibly a teeny tiny miniature egg. It's like an oops, mistake that happens in the chicken's reproductive system and this tiny egg comes out instead of a normal sized ones. A tiny piece of reproductive tissue is mistaken for an ovum in the shell gland and turns into an egg. Young chickens laying their first egg will sometimes lay a fart egg. Butterberry and Fizzleberry did it when they first started laying, and this one came when they started up again after the winter laying hiatus.

There are also something called bantam eggs -- small-sized eggs laid by bantam chickens breeds, which is a fancy chicken show word to describe small-sized chickens. Like Teacup Poodles of the chicken world. Side note: Watch the documentary "Chicken People" on Netflix for a good time and inside look into the world of Chicken Shows. Yep, like dog shows and cat shows, but chickens. But I digress.

Superstitions

Back before the internet and libraries existed, many believed that the malformed eggs were laid by roosters (cocks) and they were the work of the devil. Superstition had it that if a toad or a serpent incubated the cock’s egg, a winged beast called a cockatrice (which bore the head of a rooster and the body of a serpent) would emerge. You were supposed to throw it over your house without breaking in on your house to get rid of it. I did nothing of the sort because fart eggs / fairy eggs / dwarf eggs / wind eggs / cock eggs are perfectly good to eat, and every time you waste an egg a chicken judges you.

Are Fart Eggs Safe to Eat?

Yes! They are perfectly safe to eat. The first Fart Egg we got was only a single yolk with no egg whites. Watch the Fart Egg episode to see me crack open the fart egg and my reaction.

What's Inside a Fart Egg?

It could be a teeny tiny egg, could be just yolk, or just egg white. Each Fart Egg is different and you have to crack it open to find out.

This most recent fart egg had an ENTIRE TEENY TINY EGG and I almost just about died from excitement when I cracked it open. I've had all yolk but never a tiny egg with both yolk and egg. It was just adorable.

I fried up all three of these eggs and ate them on a piece of toast.
